What Is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition that affects the cartilage, the protective tissue that cushions the ends of bones within a joint. As cartilage breaks down over time, the result is pain, stiffness, swelling and reduced range of motion, most commonly in the hips and knees.

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common conditions affecting adults over 45 but it’s not inevitable that it limits your life. Research consistently shows that exercise and strength training are among the most effective interventions for managing osteoarthritis, reducing pain and maintaining function.

What Is the GLA:D® Program?

GLA:D® is an evidence-based education and exercise program developed in Denmark and backed by extensive clinical research. It was specifically designed for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis and has been shown to significantly reduce pain and delay or avoid the need for surgery.

Our GLA:D® certified physiotherapists guide you through a structured 6-week program that includes:

  • 2 initial one-on-one assessments
  • 2 education sessions covering osteoarthritis management and self-care strategies
  • 12 supervised group exercise classes over 6 weeks
  • Progress tracking and outcome measures throughout

The exercise component is specifically designed to improve neuromuscular control, training the muscles around the affected joint to absorb load and support movement more effectively.

Who Is It For?

The GLA:D® program is suitable for anyone experiencing hip or knee osteoarthritis, whether diagnosed or suspected. You may particularly benefit if you are:

  • Experiencing hip or knee pain, stiffness or swelling during movement
  • Preparing for or hoping to avoid joint replacement surgery
  • Finding that your osteoarthritis is limiting your ability to stay active
  • Looking for a structured, evidence-based approach to long-term management

The program is appropriate for all fitness levels and is delivered in a small group setting that is supportive and progressive.

Why Strength Is Central to Osteoarthritis Management

One of the most common misconceptions about osteoarthritis is that exercise makes it worse. The evidence is clear, it doesn’t.
Building strength in the muscles surrounding an arthritic joint reduces the load placed on the joint itself, improves shock absorption and significantly reduces pain over time. For many patients, a well-designed strength program is the difference between managing their condition indefinitely and avoiding surgery altogether.
